Travelled to Japan ( Tokyo ) where Simon trained for a month under Higaonna Morio - (currently ranked 8 th Degree Black Belt in Okinawa Gojuryu Karatedo) at the famous ‘Yoyogi Dojo’ (Shinjuku District).

SIMON LAILEY’S MARTIAL ARTS RESUME
Here is a brief resume outlining Simon Lailey’s martial arts career to date:

1974

Began to practice Okinawan Goju-ryu Karatedo at the “Vectis Karate Kai”
on the Isle Of Wight.
1976

Began to study Theravada Buddhism.

1977

Travelled to Jamaica researching ‘Jamaican Goju’ karate.

1978

Attained ‘shodan’ (‘beginning level’ black belt) in Okinawan Gojuryu karatedo.
1978-1988

Taught Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate at the, “ Academy Of Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-Do”.
1980

Travelled to Japan ( Tokyo ) where Simon trained for a month under Higaonna Morio - (currently ranked 8 th Degree Black Belt in Okinawa Gojuryu Karatedo) at the famous ‘Yoyogi Dojo’ (Shinjuku District).
1981

Attained ‘nidan’ (second degree black belt) in Okinawan Gojuryu karatedo.
1982

Travelled to the Philippines where, for five weeks, Simon studied Escrima (Arnis De Mano/Combat Judo Arnis) in Iloilo City ( Panay Island ). There did Simon also jointly form “ISDIA” – the “ Iloilo Self Defence Instructors Association”.
1984

Attained ’sandan’ (third degree black belt) in Okinawan Gojuryu karatedo. Travelled to Israel where Simon studied Judo and Shorinji Kempo.
1985

Began to learn Kendo.
1986

Taught Judo, Karate, and Self-Defence to youngsters (aged between 9 and 19) at Camp Winamac ’ - a Summer Camp in New Hampshire ( USA ). At this time did Simon study Gojuryu karate in Manchester ( New Hampshire ) and Taekwondo (in Peterborough , New Hampshire ) for a six-month period.
1987

Returned to the Philippines where Simon attended an Arnis De Mano training camp in Cebu under the Canete Family of Escrimadores. Simon then returned to Iloilo City where he continued my study of Combat Judo Arnis.
1988

Trained for a month at Sot Chitlada’s “Muay Thai” (Thai Boxing) Gym at Soi Saen Suk (on the outskirts of Bangkok ). Simon then relocated to Udon Ratchathani (ten hours by train north-east from Bangkok ) where, for one month, did he become a lay-monk at “Wat Pah Nanachat” – a forest monastery where he furthered his understanding of Theravada meditation.

Researched Silat Malayu (Malaysian Silat) in West Malaysia ( Penang , Kuala Lumpur , Pulau Besar, Kuala Trengganu, Kota Baru, and Meleka).

Researched Okinawa Gojuryu Karate and Shaolin Gongfu (Kung Fu) in Penang .

Researched Chinese Martial Arts in Singapore .

Travelled to Fuzhou ( Fujian province, south-east China ) where Simon attended a joint symposium between Higaonna Morio of the IOGKF (Okinawan Gojuryu Karate) and the Fuzhou Wushu Association (FWA). There did he study privately for one month under Zhang Tian Ci (a Master of the local Tiger Fist style).

Relocated to Australia where Simon worked and travelled whilst seeking out Martial Arts. Simon trained at an Okinawan Gojuryu Karate dojo in Geelong (under Terry Bradford) and Newcastle (under Peter Oberekar).
1989

Travelled to the USA in order to attended the first-ever “ IOGKF Miyagi Chojun Festival” in San Diego . Simon then relocated to New York City where he found work and, using NYC as his base, visited many accompolished Martial Artists all over the USA.
1990-1995

Writer and international correspondent for “Traditional Karate” and “Combat” - two UK-based martial arts publications.
1990

Travelled to Japan and Okinawa where Simon attended the “Uchinanchu Taikai” at Ginowan.

1991

Travelled to Okinawa where Simon attended an IOGKF Championship Tournament.

Travelled to Canada in order to meet with and interview the Chinese Wushu Master,
Pan Qing Fu.

Began to study Fengshui.

Travelled to Kuala Lumpur in order to interview Gongfu master and Fengshui master Master, Chee Kim Thong.

Joined Morio Higaonna Sensei’s international Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate association,
the IOGKF.

Travelled to Nyokobing Falster ( Denmark ) and Lisboa ( Portugal ) where he attended IOGKF “gasshuku” (intensive karate training programmes) under Mr. Higaonna Morio.

1992

Attained ‘sandan’ (third degree black belt) under Mr. Higaonna Morio (founder, chairman, and chief instructor of the IOGKF).
1993 – 1995

Lived and worked in Fuzhou (Mainland China ) where Simon studied under some of Fuzhou ’s leading and senior local martial arts Masters. These were: Jin Jing Fu of the Singing Crane Gongfu style; Ji Zhuo Di (of the Golden Lion Gongfu style); Lin Zai Pei (of the Dog style); and Guo Kong Xi (of the Guo Family Gongfu tradition). At this time did I also study Hubaoquan (the Tiger/Leopard style) in Wenzhou City ( Zhejiang province).

1995

Won two medals (one Gold and one Silver) at an international ‘Nanquan’ (south China gongfu) Martial Arts competition in Fuzhou.

Attended George Mattson’s Annual Summer Uechiryu Karate Camp where Simon taught the probable missing link of Okinawan Uechiryu Karate - a Suparenpai form.

Studied studied Fujian Feeding Crane under Master Liu Song Shan in Tainan
( South Taiwan ).

Attended a “Five Animals” Gongfu/Qigong seminar under Yap Ching Hai .
There did Simon also interview Master Yap Ching Hai.

1995-1997

Lived and worked in Hongkong where Simon studied Longxingqkuen (Dragon Shape Fist) under Master Jeung Gwok Dai.

Writer, researcher, and international correspondent for “Taichi International”, a bi-monthly UK magazine dedicated to the “Internal” Martial Arts.

1996

Returned to Fuzhou for one week of intensive gongfu training.

1997

Placed ‘Third’ in a local Hongkong Martial Arts competition in Tsuen Wan New Territories. Returned to Fuzhou for one week of intensive training. Proof-read and copy-edited two martial arts publications for “Charles E. Tuttle” of Boston , Massachusetts ( USA ).

1998

Freelance Writer for “Martial Arts Legends” magazine based in California.
1999

Opened a Chinese Martial Arts School teaching under the banner of “Sanshangong” (September 19 th).

2000

Assisted “ Ryde High School ” ( Isle Of Wight ) students to produce a twenty-sided, computer-generated, full-colour martial arts magazine entitled, “Young Defence”.

Founded the Wight Tiger Fengshui Consultancy School .

Wrote and presented a series of six 30-minute martial arts programmes for TV12 - a local and community-based television station.

Travelled to St. Louis (the American Mid-West) where Simon taught a one-day seminar in “Sanshangong” whilst researching further the Fujianese systems of Chinese gongfu.

Returned to Fuzhou for two weeks of intensive training.

Attended a photo-shoot for the “Samual Weiser Inc” ( USA ) Martial Arts publication, “Barefoot Zen”.

Taught Fengshui and Qigong at the “ Isle Of Wight College ” as part of the Adult Education programme. Also taught “Sanshangong” at the College, as part of the Elective Studies programme.

Returned to the Philippines in order to deepen my knowledge of local Martial Arts and attitudes to Life.

2001

Founded the “ Sanbao Qigong School .”

Taught a one-day (7 hour) Chinese martial arts seminar in Worthing .

Launched “Secrets Of The Martial Arts” – a bi-monthly magazine designed for a mature international audience.

Returned to Hongkong and Fuzhou in order to continue my training, travels, and research.

2002

Launched a second publication entitled “Kung Fu Secrets”. This is a quarterly magazine focussing upon authentic and traditional Chinese martial arts.

Attended a workshop learning Indian Martial Arts Dance whereupon at the conclusion I performed in front of a live audience.

2003

Travelled to Philadelphia where Simon studied “Five Ancestor Fist” under ‘Guru’ Mark Wiley.

2004

Visited Philippines where Simon met with “Five Ancestor” Master, Alex Co of Manila , and some senior Shotokan sensei.)

Attained 4 th Level “Duan-Wei from the “Chinese Wushu Association” of Beijing .

Appointed “Associate Teacher” of Wushu (Nanquan) with the “ Northern Ireland Wushu Association”.
