A Boy with Inner Vision Aaron has bee training privately under me for the past nine months. Blind from birth, Aaron is currently fourteen years of age and has just recently started High School. When I first presented myself at ‘Mayfield Middle School’ (in Binstead on the Isle Of Wight), Aaron immediately expressed an interest in training. I was addressing the entire school during an ‘Assembly’ one afternoon when Aaron’s hand shot up. “I am blind”, he said. “Can you teach me martial arts because I want to learn.” I responded by saying, “Of course I can teach you, Aaron. I can teach anyone as long as they really want to learn.” And from that week onwards Aaron has been practicing at my Academy once a week. So far Aaron has learnt how to sit and meditate (as a sufferer of mild cerebral palsy he has always had problems being still) whilst he has also learnt how to lock, throw, and control an aggressor. I have taught Aaron various defensive skills with his cane whilst he has also learnt some effective ‘shadow-boxing’ by way of what we call ‘form-work’. Aaron continues to enjoy his lessons and is making excellent progress all the time. He is an asset to my Academy and is an inspiration to all those that are in a similar situation to him and, indeed, an inspiration to all those who are not! |
